Reimagining space with a 70Materia totem

The formal and material design of Finemateria, a studio founded by Gianluca Sigismondi and Stefano Bassan, seeks a narrative aspect with the aim of stimulating reactions and emotions. For Orbita, this exploration materialised in Odissea Spaziale: a series of travelling totem-modules that redefine the domestic landscape, suggesting new interactions. The project introduces the Metamorfosi finish, obtained through sanding at variable intensities.

Please briefly present your research for Orbita.

FM
Odissea Spaziale is a modular collection of totemic forms. Identical in volume and material, they differ in the use of accessories that determine their function. They are travelling totems with an architectural character.

Where did the inspiration for these totems and their different variations, with mirror and shelves, come from?

FM
We wanted to work vertically, thinking of mobile wall units. We also like to imagine an evolution of these variations, which can be used in both domestic and retail environments.

Each totem can represent an accent piece within a room, featuring either a mirror or shelves. Even more interesting is the arrangement of the totems as a room divider, partitioning the living area in a novel way, providing different accessories on each side for those inhabiting the space.

How was the faded effect achieved?

FM
Metamorfosi is the new faded finish designed for 70Materia® surfaces. The idea came to us during our first visit to the company, observing the sanding of the slabs. We immediately imagined sanding the slab at different intensities, creating a faded effect where the aggregate could gradually emerge. We like to think we've added a decoration and a special accent to the company's catalogue without having to introduce new machinery, dyes, or materials.

How do you imagine the kitchen system of the future?

FM
We believe that context determines how a category of objects is conceived and perceived. In a private residence in the mountains, where intimacy is sought, the kitchen is a cosy space. But this imagery is different if we think of the city or the countryside. Therefore, the kitchen system will certainly be different in each context.
